Lawn mowers produce several pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ozone precursors, and carbon dioxide. One type of pollutant emitted by lawn mowers is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These are classified as probable carcinogens by the Centers for Disease Control. Testing found that operating a typical gasoline mower with a four-cycle engine produced as much PAH as driving a modern car about 95 miles.
Along with pollution gas powered lawn mowers also contribute to hearing loss. A Power Lawn Mower emits 100-110 decibels. Unprotected exposure to loud, steady noise over 90 dB for a short time, even several hours, may cause hearing impairment. Over exposure to noise levels higher than 90dB such as the use of lawn care tools, such as mowers, gas powered trimmers and chain saws could Permanently cause hearing damage and eventually hear loss.
